Wow, I remember in the 90′s everything being “super-sized.” Only wussies went to McDonald’s and didn’t walk out with an albatross nest of fries, and a gallon of water-downed Coke.
But, we live in a different time. Everyone is fat and getting fatter, so super-sizing is no more. And, now Dairy Queen is shrinking down too.
They will soon offer their ice cream treat, the “Blizzard,” in a new smaller size. Surprisingly, Dairy Queen says customers were calling for a smaller size. Today a “small” Blizzard is 12 ounces, but very soon it will be 7 ounces. For you math dunces – like me – that’s 5 ounces less ice cream.
A spokesperson for Dairy Queen said it works out great. Not only do loyal customers want a smaller size, but it allows the company to package the tiny Blizzards into combo meals. Cha-ching!
From a diet standpoint, a smaller Blizzard might be a savior. Right now, depending on the flavor, a small Blizzard can top 600 calories. It gets worse – large Blizzards can push 1,500 calories. And, that’s without toppings.
It’s all very scary if you think about it. Some people devour a burger, fries, regular soda, and then wash all that down with another 1,500 calories. No wonder we’re all the size of elephants.
Listen, the whole idea of trying to make fast food more health conscious is stupid. If you eat a lot of Blizzards, you really don’t care THAT much about your health, period.

Gerry despite writing for a diet blog you seem to be missing the whole point of a smaller portion size: to reduce the number of calories consumed. And as we most of us (should) know, whether you gain or lose weight depends on your daily caloric intake. This is a great way to allow yourself a treat without having to spend the extra on a bigger size you won’t finish.
Come on, for those who are offended by the elephant comment, if 40% are normal then 60% of Americans are OVERWEIGHT. Super-size and no exercise, it’s the modern American way. I think it’s changing, but fact is a majority are overweight.
I think many people don’t realize the number of calories try consume. When you start counting you would be surprised.
Arrowheads comments show insecurity.
No seriously, what is a blizzard? are they those things that I thought were supposed to be like milkshakes but are so thick your spoon stands up in them? it’s ice cream right? too cold for my liking….brrr
LOL – great answer! what a cynic!! you made me laugh… thanks I needed that!
McDonalds now has snack McFlurries!! Smaller, just enough for a trat after eating or alone!
Supersize-Huh- I don’t think so
Don’t jump to the conclusion that “everyone is fat”. That is not true. Let me tell you though, everything is made these days as though ever single solitary person was large.
I think it’s great that DQ is going to offer a smaller blizzard. Now if only the stuff they put into a Blizzard could be made healthier but just as yummy!
WOW – what an eye opener for caloric content! Supersize no more.
“No wonder we’re all the size of elephants.”
hyperbole
Well I think it’s a good idea that they are making the blizzards smaller for those that just want a small treat and to keep portion sizes smaller, and thus keep the calorie content lower, but it’s important to remember this is a treat and shouldn’t be eaten everyday if you want to keep a smaller waistline and keep your body healthy!

Speak for yourself fatso, not all of us lacking willpower.”
I agree that the comment was unnecessary and uncalled for– However, I also find it a bit irritating when authors make blanket assumptions about readers. I like the ocassional high fat dairy treat and am not overweight by any stretch– Indeed, a full 40 percent of the population has a normal weight.
While I think that dairy queen is doing the right thing by offering the smaller size (hopefully with a smaller price as well)– No matter the size of the blizzard people have to decide when to stop eating the stuff. The option was always there to eat only half or to split the desert with a friend… the option will also be there to order two and eat them both. Such changes in the fast food industry are actually mere token gestures– meant to generate good public relations (e.g. this article) than to promote real change. If they really wanted to improve the health of the nation than they would shift their reliance from corn fed, antibiotic and hormone laced beef– towards healthier grass fed beef and other dairy products (like the milk in that blizzard). They give hormones to cows to make them get fat rapidly before slaughter– what then do these hormones do to our smaller less muscular human bodies??? Could there possibly be a connection???? Gee???
Profits come from giving customers what they want. Businesses shouldn’t try at anything else.
I am always asking for less than a shop serves up for ice cream – I mean just how much do you need to satisfy your sweet tooth? Seriously, I take my son occasionally for an ice cream cone (not DQ) and for KIDS they’ll lop on what amounts to a pint of ice cream – it’s criminal! I simply tell them SMALL SMALL SCOOP – I will pay the normal price, but do NOT make it a crazy big scoop – he’s five and simply doesn’t need to be presented with what amounts to an ice cream cone with enough servings to feed a family of six!
Probably true, but not in factor in how I feel about the change. I’m all for it.
This move has nothing to do with health, only more profits.
Awesome! I’ve been wondering when restaurants here in the States would start doing this. I remember when I went to El Salvador, we’d eat at Wendy’s sometimes and they had a small Frosty that was about 6 ounces (it came in a small Styrofoam coffee cup) and it was perfect! I’m glad Dairy Queen is jumping on the bandwagon.
I agree with ArrowSmith, a great contributor.
I think it is a great idea (although for European eyes 7 oz is the big size…) It is possible to eat anything and loose weight, but not any amount. Shrink icecream size to 2 oz, and it will be reasonable once or twice a week.
Jeez… that’s harsh. And like sprice76 said, totally uncalled for.
And, just as a thought, you might want to consider proofing your statements before posting (if you’re gonna post something so inflammatory). Posting something grammatically incorrect just makes you sound ignorant and childish.
Wow, that was totally unnecessary…
This is great! I love blizzards but don’t like consuming a meal’s worth of calories in one dessert, so I rarely buy them. Same with milkshakes. Hopefully other restaurants will follow suit.
No wonder we’re all the size of elephants.
Speak for yourself fatso, not all of us lacking willpower.
I use to eat a few large Blizzard a week. I didn’t realize they were at least 1500 calories.
