3 Goofy Fitness Gadgets Every Woman Needs?
I admire entrepreneurs, yet at the same time I grimace at some of the intriguing products that come to market. Fitness and weight loss attract more than their fair share of gimmicks.
Here are three fitness products that gave me a chuckle over the last few months.
1. The Valslide
Priced at $34.95, the Val slide is a "dynamic, new exercise tool developed by celebrity trainer, Valerie Waters".
The device consists of two pads that slide across the floor. Apparently this allows certain movements to be performed (think Lunges) without getting your shoe caught up in the carpet.
You can see Valerie demonstrating them here.

Purchase Valslide from Amazon for $34.95... and don't tell Valerie that the Valslide looks a lot like these $14.95 furniture sliders from Bed, Bath, & Beyond.
2. cLEAN Momma
Clean momma is about Taskercising™, also known as exercising while you clean. The program will help you "tighten and tone your entire body". Created by Carolyn Barnes, the program is tailored towards women, because "we all have dishes to wash and clothes to fold".
This program is hilarious and ridiculous. You would have to be one fanatical cleaner to get some fitness gains from housework. I believe that exercise should be a part of something you enjoy... like hiking or riding your bicycle... but combining it with housework? Sounds like something I would dread.
If you want a laugh, take a look at this:
The cLEAN Momma DVD is available for purchase at www.cLEANMomma.com for $14.95
3. The Shake Weight
This thing appeared in August 2009, and had to be the weirdest fitness gadget yet. Claiming to give you "strong, sexy, sculpted arms and shoulders", the shake weight is - once again - aimed at women who feel their arms do not conform the current beauty standard.
Apparently there is now a Shake Weight for men (that still looks every bit as ridiculous).
For 6 minutes a day and $20 you too can own such a gadget. If you can bear it, take a look at the video.

I don't see anything funny.
In fact, I have seen fitness experts explain how much calories can be burned with various household chores, and how to turn your chores into a workout.
Sorry everyone can't be a gym rat.
ReplyI think exercising while cleaning is a good idea... every bit of activity should be encouraged!
However, I know too many women who think raising their kids and cleaning their house (complete with all modern appliances to do so) is all they need and don't understand why they have extra weight and inadequate strength and endurance. I would worry this perpetuates that.
Exercising and maintaining your good health doesn't require being a "gym rat" but it does require effort and acting like it's weird to spend time in the gym (or outside) is just ridiculous when it should be standard.
ReplyLook, I am always against to thing and tools those are necessary to use for excersize, please just do the normal excersize it make impact late but it will be solid.
ReplyEllen DeGeneres actually made those shake weights famous by JOKING abut them on her show & that is when they decided to come out with the men's one. They ought to give her a cut with the money they are making because she joked on her show about it!
As for the slide discs, there is also the glide discs that have been out for ever! Even cheaper, use a couple paper plates. I will have to check into those furniture sliders! It is a good workout to move in that sliding fashion though for a mix it up workout.
As for cleaning, nothing is going to make me want to do that but it can work you if you have to fit in the exercise.... squats with the cleaning bottles or squat down to pick up a laundry basket, lunge & vacuum. I would not buy the product but you can find ways to work yourself.
ReplyI brought the clean momma for my wife and she loves it!! i would recommend it
ReplyI actually think that encouraging people (so sad that it's 100% aimed at women) to get some exercise while cleaning is a GREAT idea. Sure, you want exercise to be fun - but you have to clean. There's no getting around it. Dishes have to be done, floors have to be swept, laundry has to be washed. Why not get something out of it while you're at it? And the exercise part might actually make the cleaning part more fun.
ReplyThe ValSlides are kind of cool, but for about $0.01, you can use paper plates and get the exact same result. As for the cLEAN Momma thing, I can see it being a kind of good idea because you have to clean anyway. I personally do squats and lunges while I do laundry and unload the dishwasher.
I kind of want to try that shake weight thing, only to see what it feels like. I wouldn't buy one, though...it seems a tad ridiculous.
ReplyOh... I've written about using housework as a form of exercise on my own blog in the past, but seeing the clean momma video made me laugh!! :-) Kudos to Carolyn though, for being a bit out-there with her ideas, I think it makes her interesting to watch.
And, as B and Spectra said, we have to clean anyway, so why not make it a little more interesting and worthwhile!
