The Lunch Box Diet

The Lunch Box Diet is a small downloadable document (10 pages) from UK personal trainer Simon Lovell. Although Simon describes the diet as “no fad” its recent appearance in Elle Magazine may well change that.

So what is the “lunch box diet”?

It’s a simple concept:

  • Get yourself a large plastic lunchbox
  • Fill it with a highly nutritious mix of vegetables, proteins, and fats.
  • Slowly graze on the lunch box contents all through the day (i.e. in between breakfast and dinner). The idea here is to snack on some food every hour or so (never gorge).

Elle calls it a “tried & tested party diet”.

The mix in the lunchbox should be something like 60% vegetables, 30% lean proteins, and 10% dressing.

Favorite vegetables include Broccoli, Spinach, Avocado, Chilli pepper, Sugarsnap peas, and asparagus. Proteins may include things like Tuna, Grilled Chicken or Turkey Breast. Dressings will be something like olive oil, chutney, seeds or nuts. Note that the small ebook provides a much larger list. There is no mention of precise amounts or quantities.

Starchy carbs (such as brown pasta, brown rice) are only recommended if you engage in an active job or lifestyle.

The Principle
The concepts behind the diet make sense. Spend the day consuming nutrient-dense vegetables. Train your stomach to become smaller – thus when it is time to eat dinner you probably won’t be able to binge. Don’t get too rigid or restrictive.

Breakfast and dinner should be kept “normal” although some good diet recommendations are made.

Sample Lunch Box: ‘Chicken Surprise’

  • Flavoured Chicken breast strips
  • Rocket, Lettuce, Avocado, Sugarsnap Peas, Broccoli
  • Cheese, Nuts, Chutney, Seeds

Price
Simon charges £9.95 (USD21) which is steep for a 10 page text document. That amount of money can buy you some wonderful and detailed hardback books.

hi, I’m new to the site and so far I really like it. The differing opinions are actually a really helpful gauge on diets. This “Lunch Box” diet seems pretty sound. I’m one of those people that does graze (usually on junk, but that’s why I’m at the weight I’m at lol) so having a preset box of good foods seems like a good idea.
Also, I’ve looked before and there are some really, really cute bento boxes available online in various sizes/designs.

Kim…or anyone who has actually done this diet.
What or how much do you typically have in a day?

Do you fill the lunch box for the entire day, and
just have nothing but what’s in the box?

I’d really like more details from someone presently on it or that has done it. Thanks, katydid

Anyone tried this? I’d love to hear your experience.

It seems like basically a gimmick to get you to eat a salad for lunch every day, but I could use a gimmick like that. I like the idea of putting together a salad in the morning and grazing on it all day long. I like that it wouldn’t interfere with family dinners, either.

This is what many bodybuilders/figure competitors do with a lunch box or cooler.

Ha! Ive done this for years…i always end up snacking on crap if i dont bring my own snacks.

I normally have blanched green beens, capsicum strips, carrots, nuts, asparagus and brocolli…and i bring a low fat dip or make my own salsa and guacamole. Sometimes i add noodles and meat if i bring it as a meal…its normally too big for one sitting so it stays on my desk til its gone by the end of the day. mmm lots of herbs and things too!

I’m really happy with the 5 Star Elle review obviously! if you go to the web site and ‘my boxes’ there will be loads of vege boxes added soon. My clients have been on the diet for over a year and continue to love it. Anyway, thanks for the post, at least I hope people can manage to at least shape theior lives in a better way using my plan. It’s getting quite a bit of interest which is exciting!
