The Baby Food Diet

Menswear designer Hedi Slimane creates slim-fitting clothes - probably because he is rather thin himself. The Telegraph reports that his 'secret' is baby food.

"The less I chew, the better," he tells one interviewer. Chicken, according to rumour, is his favourite flavour.

The Telegraph writer then goes on to try his own baby food diet.

As I trawl the baby-food section of my local supermarket, I have no sense of impending doom. Fisherman's pie. Vegetable hotpot. Fruity chicken casserole. Banana and cookie crumble. Yes, it's baby food but the labels on the bottles sound reassuringly like real food. Organic baby food seems to outnumber non-organic by two to one.
Hey... whatever works I guess...

The results:

I have lost 4lb over the weekend, according to the bathroom scales. But the inside of my mouth taste's like cat's fur and my head aches. I would not recommend this regime to my worst enemy.

Uh, gross. Cold pureed green beans and "meat". Icky. ALthough, Gerber makes a really good apple pear sauce that's kind of a yummy dessert. But yeah, how could you not lose weight eating pureed carrots? GROSS!!

You can heat them up....
From Gerber of what i have tried the sweet potatoes, applesause, fruit melody, and banana and even squash is not bad. I like to heat all flavors up.

I have heard of weight trainers eating a couple of pots of baby food right after a workout too as a quick fix! Not sure if it is one for me though!

I think that if I were going to go the "I don't want to chew" route, I'd use a food processor to puree the food, and be able to spice it up the way I wanted it.
Still, the whole idea sounds a little distasteful to me!

If all I had to eat was baby food I would probably loose weight too. What's next - the adult breast feeding diet?

I have tried it... when I couldn't chew anything for 3 days. I did lose a couple of lbs. But I could only eat the fruit and dessert varieties and had to supllement my diet with a protein powder smoothie every day.

The issue here is that unless someone wants to eat baby-food for ever, the diet will ultimately fail in the long term when they start eating 'normally again. Weight 'yo-yoing' practices like this put our bodies under huge stress and we can end up with a bigger problem than before.

James is absolutely right to suggest finding a lifestyle plan and sticking to it. You don't need diets. And his plan looks good, there is just one thing I would clarify for other people James...

You include sunflower oil as an oil to be avoided, but it is possible to get organic, unrefined, cold-pressed sunflower oil which, along with many other cold-pressed oils, is absolutely fine.

I would also question the 'need' for red meat, but agree that if you are going to eat it, grass fed, organic (ie. free from anti-biotics, steroids etc.) is the way to go. Otherwise I'd say eggs, chicken (both free range, organic), fish (non-farmed) are all fine.

As for dairy... butter and yoghurt from cows' milk is okay, but soy, rice, nut or goat milk and a cheese from goat or sheep are preferable because they are all easier for humans to digests.

Plus, there are so many fantastic plant proteins which you haven't mentioned - tofu, chickpeas, beans, seeds, lentils, quinoa etc. - which are all absolutely fantastic for weight loss. And if you chew properly and reduce your sugar intake, you won't get any embarassing wind with it!! ;o)

Hi Claire,
I am just curious because I have a lot to lose and would like to give it a kick start. I have read many comments about this here. What causes the gas and headaches with this diet? There is less sugar, less processing in this. There should be less gas, not more. And why headaches? You seem to know alot about this so Im asking you (you also seem more well balanced, not riled up easily). Thanks in advance for your help.

Just make gradual changes in your lifestyle and slowly try to cut excess sugars and saturated fats. Also start adding more veggies, fruits and whole grains. That's all there is to it. No secret. All that really matter is how calorie taken in and how much you exert. So that means exercise plays a role in weight losss and muscle tone. Make the calories that you intake quality and nutritous. No Gimmicks. Gradual changes and moderation on foods, not eliminating is the key to a healthful and energetic life. God Bless you all!

DOTTIE,
i am overweight, have high blood pressure and have high cholesterol, i am 25 years old. i realised about all these about a year ago, and decided i needed to make some changes, it was not easy, it never is, but a year later i am 30lbs down, and my cholesterol went from 250 to 216. i pretty much did what James described above, excep for the red meat, which i seldom eat nowadays and i try to excercise at least 3 times a week.i feel so much better now, my advise is, take it one day at a time :D

(IN RESPONSE TO CLAIR)

The reason is to why to avoid sunflower oil, as for now, is because it upsets the Omega 6-omega 3 ratio. You need to keep it as 1:1 as possible. Also, I would choose olive oil over sunflower oil, because olive oil has a high smoke point, and has less potential fats that go rancid when it comes to cooking. You DON'T want to have any omega 3 nor omega 6 fatty acids in the oils, as heat damages the molecues, and that good fat will become bad.

And you have to think about it. Some red meats arn't bad for you. What red meat to TRY to avoid is lot-fed beef cattle, as they have an unhealthy fat ratio and bad quality protein. What I DO suggest eating sometimes is bison, ostrich, and emu. They have more nutrients, have a better polyunsaturated fat ratio, as well as a balanced monounsaturated fat-saturated fat ratio. They are extremily low fat, anyways, and have less cholestrol and saturated fats than even in chickens. Afterall, all red meats arn't created equal. And I am clarifying it: Certain red meats are bad for you, and the ones that you should avoid, again, are badly fed, badly treated and drugged, corn-fed lot-fed cows. Stay away from them.

And I have to stress this: Chickens are one of the worse treated animals in the US. Try looking at factory farms on the internet. I am just appalled on how they are treated. They get drugged, they have their beaks chopped off by a hot blade, they are fed a poor diet, and eating meat fed a poor diet will make YOU sick. So for now, don't buy store-bought chicken. My restaurant that I take out now, I usually take out Hobo Salmon topped with unions with cucumber salad and steamed, flavored vegtables, but I just can't wait till they release bison on the menu.

But as allways, make HALF your animal protein intake in fish, and make 75% of it oily fish. Salmon is low in mercury, too. There's a new hawaiian fish that's comming out that's even lower in mercury and is even oilier than salmon. And since Americans are Omega 3 and magnesium deficient, it's a great time to add plenty of fish into the diet.

But there's one that should NEVER be on anyone's diets. They are: starchy vegtables and grains (like white potatos, white pasta such as macaroni, spaghetti and strogenoff), fried foods, sugary junk (like eating ho-hos or ring dings every day), pastery, and doughnuts.

And as allways, GO ORGANIC! New research shows that pesticides are deep in fruits and vegtables and could lead to health problems like heart cancer (Yes, heart cancer is on the rise), blindness, nearve problems, miniral deficiencies, and even brain tumors. Pesticides are also polluting the soil, polluting the streams, and are even causing calcium deficiency in birds which causes them to lay eggs with very thin shells. Factory farming is now contributing to global warming.

But, I accept GMO foods with nutritional pluses and animal domestication and faster production, but please, reject GMO foods designed for pesticide resistancy and termination seeds, as these types of GMO is a danger to the enviornment.

are some of the foods deadly if your baby is over weight?

Reply
Carrie

the baby food "diet" only works if you substitute your current desserts with 100 cal. jars of banana pudding baby food, etc...
it is just as easy to slice a banana and freeze it tho--for a good dessert.

Baby food is great for traveling, some of the fruit stuff and some veg taste very good. Not a bad idea to include it when camping or long journeys. Better(on a few levels) to eat a jar of sweet potatoes than a bag of doritos. Overall I think it is probably too sweet. I have never tried the meats (which would need heating to be palatable)

If you ate it often, INSTEAD of your regular healthy food, of course it would make you ill... psych & phys both. My sister eats the desserts all of the time and she is no baby--she has had a few so she knows what is tasty and what is not.
