The LeDiet Plan

Popular web portal Yahoo released their shiny new home page today. Along with their comprehensive health resources they also have an online diet plan (LeDiet). LeDiet is based in France, and is operated in partnership with Yahoo.

Yahoo's LeDiet begins with a very comprehensive survey of your current eating habits (right down to individual foods and quantities). However the food allergy section was lacking in many common allergens.

Diet Analysis

After the survey I was presented with an analysis of my diet. I ended up underestimating my daily food intake - but even so, the analysis informed me that my diet was too high in protein, too high in fats - but carbohydrate was a little low. It warned me that my fiber intake was excessive, and calcium intake insufficient.

Calcium intake is an issue for me, and the survey was not fine-grained enough to pick up the subtle differences within food groups (i.e. almonds are higher in calcium than most other nuts).

The macro-nutrient criticisms are unfounded. My fats tend to come from oily fish, nuts, and maybe flax seed - and I do not believe my fat intake is too high in any sense. This highlights (in some ways) how our preoccupation with macro-nutrients overshadows the nutritional benefits of individual foods.

The Balance Diet
From here on, payment is required - with LeDiet promising the following:
The LeDiet Balance Plan is a "positive" diet: no prohibited foods, no restrictions, no disruption to your food intake or your way of life, no drugs, and no meal substitutes.
From here on in, Yahoo's LeDiet is ready to set-up a billing cycle. The plan costs $14.95 and can be cancelled at any time (with 5 days notice).

Is it me, or does anyone else think that a majority of the diet plans out there are way too complicated?

The general populace just doesn't think in terms of carbs, proteins, calories, etc.

Most people think in food groupings. The beginning health conscious probably thinks more in terms of "combos" than anything else (e.g I had a burger, fry and soda or I had a sandwich, salad and a lemonade).

It'd make much more sense to create a service that at least initially tracks nutrition at a higher level of abstractional groupings. While obvious it's not nearly as accurate as breaking down the meals into individual foods, maybe more importantly, it would provide a roadmap for training the individual to first pay attention (most don't even do that!), and then later for better health optimization, have them break down their meals further.

The beginner is better off with gross estimates first, and then working toward a refined system.

I was told by Le Diet that I was doing fine except for a little too much protein, and that I should not try to lose weight. I find this interesting because a lot of these plans tell you how to get thinner even when you are already so scrawny.
I eat a lot of fiber and they didn't say it was too much, which surprised me.
It shouldn't be so complicated. If you have a sort of plan that works for you, and you can eat in restaurants without freaking out, it should be OK. Food journaling helped me figure out what worked, but I don't trust diet plans where the experts never see you.

It seems like Yahoo has finally decided to take full advantage of the diet cash market. What next, a Google weight loss plan??

It is really interesting seeing another diet come out that analysis your diet when another diet said your eating habits are correct. Which one is right and which one are false. I just rather stick to eating a healthy balanced diet that consist of healthy foods at the right times. I don't believe we need the lastest diet to lose weight but a personal choice.

It’s true most diets are pretty complicated. To keep things in perspective you should remember three basic things, eat less, cut down on refined carbs, saturated fats, trans fats, and exercise on most days of the week.

Remember, exercising just 3-4 days per week is for maintaining weight loss, not for losing weight.

Jonquility: It's funny - that's exactly what I was thinking: Google Diets®

I've never seen such a proliferation of diets.

I went to the site just out of curiosity and boredom. Other than it being really difficult to remember what I typically eat in a week, I thought the site was good.
First of all, it won't let you continue with the program unless the weight you put in as your goal weight is above the "underweight" mark for BMI. If your current weight is a healthy weight it tells you this as well. I thought this was a nice change from all the diet programs (mostly found in women's magazines) that urge you to lose more and more weight even if you are already at a healthy weight.
Two thumbs up for Yahoo and le Diet!

Same here! Does anyone know how to unsubscribe? Please email me if you do. I have to send a letter cancelling my subscription (which I never had) in order to refuse payment of my credit card.

What a jip lediet.com is! Did you know they have two different websites (one through yahoo and one independent of yahoo)? Be forwarned if you decide to take a plunge into the darkness of their billing services. YOU WILL BE JIPPED!!!

I lost $15 and have a major headache after trying unsuccessfully to cancel my account on lediet.com. They say there's a "cancel my subscription" button on the site, but that's such a LIE. I tried opening the site with 3 different internet browsers: IE, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari, and not one loaded a cancellation button.

Lediet.com is definitely is definitely in the business of helping us lose...lose MONEY that is!!!

BOYCOTT LE DIET.com NOW!!!!

I agree. I have had the same problems. My user name, password and e-mail address are not recognized, yet they continue to bill my account. They say that you can cancel in writing, but there is no address. How were you finally able to cancel your subscription?

Be aware - Le Diet will be charging your credit card even after cancellation of service! This happened to me - I had cancelled my subscription the next day after signing up and I they kept charging my credit card for next 4 months! I sent them emails by nobody responded. Yahoo should not advertised any scam companies like Le Diet! What does Yahoo have to say about that??? I had to change my credit card number and start the investigation with my credit card company.

All of the previous comments apply to my experience ... BEWARE ... there's NO tab to cancel subscription, there's NO telephone or address details on the website to contact them directly and all communication is through the message box, my link to my profile was broken after the 5th email and the only way to get in was from the LeDiet webpage .... I enrolled and paid first subscription with my Debit card then wanted to cancel ... without success so I've had to cancel my Debit card so they won't have my new card details to take further payments .... voila!

Thank you everyone for putting your comments on this site. Le Diet came up on my hotmail front page & I thought I would look through it. Listening to my own doubts, and reading your comments I will definately not be subscribing!
Thanks again.
Karen.
