Kirstie Alley: Weight Loss Success?

i-b1732e31bcc164848ed219678032c92e-kirstiealley_people.jpgThis time of year the magazines are heavily embellished with sensational weight loss stories. Some are uplifting, some believable, and some are nothing but hype.

Kirstie Alley has featured heavily (no pun intended – honest!) – with dramatic before-and-after pictures. She promotes the weight loss program Jenny Craig, and has been appearing in a new round of TV commercials. Apparently because she’s not fat anymore – “It’s Raining Men…” The Jenny Craig Way
Jenny Craig will be grinning from ear-to-ear. Kirstie Alley has done everything they could have hoped for – as far as celebrity endorsements go. Since beginning the program in December 2004 she has lost more than 55 pounds – after an apparent starting weight of 220 pounds. So what exactly was Kirstie eating?

Sample Day (1400 Calories)
Breakfast: Apricot Crumble Bar
Snack: 1 apple and 1 kiwi
Lunch: Broccoli and Cheese Potato
Snack: Sweet Chilli and Lime Sticks
Dinner: Honey Mustard Lamb
Snack: Fruit Muesli Cookie

This eating plan was matched with an apparently consistent exercise regime (40 minutes per day) involving lots of dance.

Cost?
i-776d881e61886c828f845e0c2359ee2c-kirstiealley.jpg
The Jenny Craig program doesn’t come cheap. It’s virtually impossible to determine the exact costs of Jenny Craig as they are not listed, and are calculated on an individual basis. The cheapest membership deals come in at $6 per week plus the cost of food (estimated at $100 per week). That means that if you and I were following Kirstie Alley’s routine – the costs would be (52 weeks x $106 per week) up to $5512. That’s a lot of money considering it’s all processed microwave food.

Motivator or Aggravator?
Reading too many magazine weight loss stories can make you grind your teeth with jealousy – or fuel your self-motivation. We’re so used to dramatic rapid transformations (particularly with “extreme makeover” stories) – that we’ve come to believe it’s instantaneous. Transforming your physical self with diet and exercise is not an instant event – it is a long long painstaking commitment that is measured in years rather than days.

Kirstie Alley has demonstrated that change is possible, and it does take time. Kudos to her for that.

Although it makes one think – If you were a celebrity, would you seriously consider getting larger, just so you could sell your story getting thin again? This is not implying that Kirstie Alley has done such a thing… but it’s an interesting idea none-the-less.

Firstly. You all have to read the fine print… She didn’t say she was 220lbs. She said her left buttcheek weighed 220lbs!

You have to give her credit for her hard work???
OMG. She was a star and in my opinion, one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. WTF would someone throw all that away to eat like a pig. Lets face it. Anyone with a the slightest inkling of common sense can look at that huge woman and laugh when she says it was 220lbs.

I have only seen one reply on here that really makes sense. You have to workout “HARD” every day, or at least most days to have a nice body. It’s all about “MUSCLE”! What burns fat? Muscle and only muscle. If you have no muscle, you can not loose weight. The more muscle you have the more fat you will lose. Muscles grow from use and muscles are what makes a nice body and keeps fat off. I weighed 205 at my heaviest and I made a promise to myself that I will never get that heavy again. Why do I gain weight? Easy.. I’m addicted to sugar and video games. If I gave in to what I really wanted… I would be 500lbs and play games all days and eat candybars for 6 meals a day. Here’s 2 diets that worked for me personally.
Once I wanted to loose weight so I only ate one meal a day. But any time I was hungry,,, and I mean HUNGRY! Not “bored”. I ate a small bowl of Special K with the strawberries. “good stuff”. I actually lost about 1 pound a day. Very supprising. Very cheap.

Another time I wanted to loose weight, I got a gym membership and spent 2 hours a day on the eliptical machine listening to my favorite music. Also scoping out all the very hot ladies working out downstairs. This method was better because I practically lived on chocolate and other junk food but still lost so much weight that when my friends told me I was so skinny, I looked like I had AIDS. That’s when I quit. That wasn’t the look I was going for.
Now I have gain weight again so I am climbing the 2 mountains every morning. Jury is still out on how effective this will be but gotta be better than watching something boring on TV!

    I didn’t. But then, I didn’t diet every day.

I eat less than 1000 calories/day and weigh 130 lbs. And I didn’t exercise — other than ordinary walking — to get to this weight. If I ate 1500 calories/day, I would weigh 200 lbs. One number does not fit all; 1500 calories (or any other number) will produce different results with different people. It all depends on one’s metabolic level.

I’ve heard that you don’t have to eat JC’s food, just follow their plan. For example, if you keep kosher, there’s no way you can eat their food. But you can follow their advice on exercise, fresh produce, etc.

The JC plan does have you eating unlimited salads and soup. People need to be educated on what it includes before they criticize. Any diet is good if it works for you and you stick to it. The foods are not overly processed and they wean you off the microwaved entrees and suggest whole grain – even sprouted wheat breads.

Thirty years ago I weight 300 pounds. I thought I would die fat. I was 24 years old and had been fat all my life. I was introduced to a program call Overaters Anonymous. I went because they did not have scale and they did not cost anything. Today I STILL weigh around 155. Because of this program I have never had to go out and buy a new wardrobe because I gained all my weight back. I have found a solution that has worked for 30 years.

Jenny Craig is a great place to start. The food is really good and it teaches portion control. You can get 20lbs for $20 or 10 weeks, whichever is sooner. You can platform off after that to something else but the food is good and the quick head start will likely keep you motivated to keep going. How frustating when you don’t see results, you want to stop. Short term it’s awesome. Its nice not to have to focus on food weather preparing, shopping to talking about it. With Jenny just heat and eat and get on with your life. Eat to live, don’t eat to live right?? I want to eat because I have to, not because I really want to. Some of these shows, shows wonderful meals, lots of prep and work and its gobbled in 45 seconds. I’m too busy for shoping and cooking these days, except maybe on an occasional weekend. Now they have places where you can go for a day and cook meals for the whole month. That works too.

I started Jenny Craig April of 2006 and by late August the same year I lost 27 pounds. It is now September of 2008 and i found that i have gained back 15 pounds. Unfortunately, i am part of the 98% of people who have lost weight and gain it back within 2 years.

Jenny Craig did wonders in the beginning, but in the long run i find myself almost back at the drawing board and as i type this i am googling for a better weight loss program that doesn’t make you buy their products for years and years on end in order to maintain or lose more weight.

Jenny Craig’s diet is based on counting calories, and over time your body gets used to that amount of calories and then you find that you are no longer losing weight. Instead you may find yourself slowly gaining back your weight.

I found that i felt i was depriving myself of certain food, which isn’t what a diet is supposed to do. I just find myself frustrated and this dieting thing has become the worst of me.

I’m sure this is a big money maker for Jenny Craig. Diets don’t work, she will gain the weight back, I guarantee it. Transitions from Market America and Dr. Shari Lieberman is something that acually works because it’s not a diet. “Diet” is a 4-letter word.

I am a huge fan of Jenny Craig. After 3 kids in 3 years and a fulltime job I was finding it difficult to stick to a diet. JC saved me. I lost 26 lbs in 3 months and have kept it off for 3 months now. I am on the maintenance program but still use the snacks because they are great. The program is not for everybody. If you love to cook and are very into good food, it might be tough for you. I found the food enjoyable. And, by the way…I don’t care who their spokesperson is!

If you HAD money like her you you would be on the JC diet to. For all those liars out there JC food is good Im from the south where every thing is well season so diets are hard to follow because the food is really bland. If your not use to good food then of course this is not for you but if you are and if your not scared to cut back on your food portion then jump on the band wagon. Yeah Its pretty pricey but what do you prefer in the summer time cute short maybe a swimming suite or a long skirt or a big beach towel to cover up that fat. Pick and choose win or lose! Nicole

I agree with Lori Hale. After recently seeing her in person at a PR meeting with the company I was doing production work for, I was shocked at how small she is. while I am 5″3 and 149, I am not nearly as fit, but wear an 8. At a few inches taller than me, she was easily a trus size 6, but curvy, not flat and rail like. She is also pretty fit for a mom with a nutty crazy work schedule. Polite, funny, interesting and intelligent, she was nice to everyone from the receptionist to the VP, and everyone in between. She was very interested in everyone’s point of view and seems like she is very hardworking (a 14 hour day and not a peep of complaint out of her, and she was traveling straight to another meeting. Even I can’t hold up that well after years of this. And I dont have to stop for photos and autographs with 50 people between the lobby and the car.), and out there for the world to say the worst about her in every forum possible. Congrats to anyone who does the work, maintains such grace under criticism… and loves themself no matter what.

Jenny Craig, good bad & ugly…
Generally, Im not a dieter nor a blogger…but Im getting older & the pounds are adding up. I work a lot and didnt have the time to figure things out so I tried Jenny & Weight Watchers. I much prefer Jenny’s food, no counting, no meetings, food can be delivered to your office or home. The food is pretty good, I dont think its expensive given that I live in NY, I think eating 3 meals on $15/ day is the price of 1 salad.
However thats where it ends….you go on their site, a nice menu planner pops up. You select your meals for the week, but can you email them to the center, NO, can you price it out, NO again.
You have to then print & fax. Theres no confirmation from them that they received your fax, so you keep calling. Why they do not participate in the world of email efficiency is beyond me…Then you need for them to price out and call you back, again another PITA.

I think a lot of emphasis seems to be on the fact that Kirstie lied about her starting weight…don’t tell me that none of you overweight people have ever taken a few pounds, a stone or maybe even more off when you tell people your weight? No one wants to admit how big they are (as we all know fat people are despised by ignorant society). Who cares what she started at – what’s important surely is that she’s lost that 70lbs or whatever it is? It’s just as hard to lose weight whatever your starting weight whether you’re famous or supported or paid to do it or not! And yes, ok she may still be too large to be healthy or fashionable (I haven’t seen photos myself or the adverts)but she’s still lost that weight. She should be applauded – I know how she’s yo-yo dieted for many years and suffered with her weight problem. I keep reading everywhere that ‘Kirstie lied!’, that she’s a bad role model/influence on dieters and is misleading the public; all I have to say is get over yourselves; the public aren’t stupid and dieters though desperate to try ANYTHING are not going to flock like sheep to try this diet just because ‘Kirstie Alley’ says it worked for her. People will try any diet/pill/machine even if Hitler had suggested it, bacause they want to lose weight! The fact that Kirstie is saying it is immaterial!I mean, most people aren’t complete gormless idiots! Also, I think the fact that she’s still overweight is a much more realistic representation of weight loss than if a tiny skinny person was standing there afterwards – people would be suspicious. If someone had told me when I was at my very biggest (15.5 stone)that I would be paid 5 million to lose 14lbs it would not have made dieting with an eating disorder (which Kirstie obviously has) any easier! And keeping it off afterwards is even harder, it’s no reflection on the diet, just the dieter!

Also although I have never seen pictures of Kirstie at her largest, in the ones I have seen (before weight-loss pics)there’s no way she was EVER 500lbs (that’s about 35 stone!)or even 322lbs (er 23 stone?). So I think some people need to brush up on sizes vs weights! I’d say she was probably about 18 or 19 stone, so after 75lbs she’d now be about 12.5/13.5 stone…? Which is roughly a UK size 16/18. Ok, not magazine perfect but pretty acceptable. Let’s get things into perspective here! Yeah, she’s not that ‘Cheers’ girl anymore but she’s older, with an eating disorder! Of course, if anybody has a 35 stone Kirstie-at-her-biggest picture let me see it and I’ll retract my ramblings and get off my soapbox, but I doubt it somehow.

Yes, just find the veggie and low fat dishes. Find a good fresh product place with reasonable costs, decent quality, as to those and they do vary by 40% or so in costs. Nobody need to pay the millions to these fat cats and their products and pricey commercials. Use common sense and follow many of the on line diets for NO CHARGE. Why add to their millions?

I just read this article and want to share something I was just introduced to. I started working with a Public Relations company and I’m so glad I did because we are working with doctors to help promote FBCx (F-bex). I got to try it out and fell in love. FBCx is an all-natural dietary fiber that is able to bind dietary fat and make you lose weight. You take it with your 3 regular meals having 20 grams of fat or more, so it’s really easy. If you’re on a low calorie diet it won’t work well for you, so get back to eating what you want. If you want to learn more or try it out for yourself, go to http://www.fbcx.com.

Okay, I am finally posting about this because It is so irritating to me. I am a 37 year old 5’4″ mother of 4. 10 years ago after the birth of my last child I weighed 220 lbs. I lost 80lb through diet and tons of exercise and was 140 lb. I am now 145 lb and wear a size 8. I don’t exercise as much a before, so am not quite as toned as I would like, but there is no way that Ms Ally and I weigh the same with her being over 3 inches taller than I. And I have seen myself in video and photos and it doesn’t make you look that much bigger. Every woman probably lies about weight at some point, but Ms Ally is being paid to promote a diet and lying about where she started and how far she has come is a huge misrepresentation. It’s destructive to those who have worked very hard to lose weight and feel good about themselves to see her claiming to be a certain weight and then still looking quite overweight on t.v. I give her a ton of credit for getting up and doing something about it, but why not tell the truth, what does she have to lose? The pictures don’t lie, and I am not stupid enough to believe her claims. What happen when a young 5’7″, 145 lb girl (this is a perfectly healthy weight for this height) see’s these pictures and believes herself to look like that??? Very irresponsible Kirstey! You chose to go public with your weight loss, please at least be honest about the numbers!

Have any of you doubters seen Kirstie face to face? I have. She is not big boned, the camera adds that. She is in fact a farily tiny person now. I was shocked that it was really her when I saw her in a restaurant in her hometown. She looks MUCH skinner in person and tinier than on camera. After seeing her, i do believe her original weight and present weight. Wow!… Go Kirstie!

You people that have to join programs like this to lose weight make me laugh. It’s common sense. Sure in extreme cases people can have thyroid problems, etc. that are responsible for obesity, but usually it’s just eating too many calories at any one time. You have to simply adapt to a lower calories slowly. That is the secret–your own body can adapt to using a lower amount of calories if you let it. That means any program ANY that restricts total calories is going to work–if you stick with it and simply let your body adapt over time. Where people fall down is going back to eating more calories.
And that’s the secret as well–eating actually ramps up your metabolism. You have to eat enough to keep it going, but eat the right things–things that encourage fat loss and not muscle mass to burn up–and eating too few calories and things that run up your insulin won’t ever work the best–things like “Apricot crumble bar” lol.
In a nutshell, here is the secret:
    1. The more you eat, the more your metabolism runs up.
    2. Your body adapts to a certain caloric level
    3. Combine 1 & 2, and that’s why people fail when they go on a starvation diet–it works at first, then your body adapts to the lower calories. And you hit a plateau where no real fat loss can occur any longer–and worse you’re starving and burning up muscle tissue as a result as well.
To lose fat the fastest way possible, you have to control 1. insulin, 2. your metabolism, 3. your calories
You body adapts to caloric level–it can also adapt to any # of calories per day. That means if you’re always eating 1400 calories/day–your body is going to eventually adapt to it. Same applies to each meal–your body adapts to the # of calories from one meal to the next, if you keep repating it exactly day after day.
Don’t believe it? Try this simple approach and see for yourself:
    Day 1: breakfast=700, lunch=500, dinner=800
    Day 2: breakfast=500, lunch=700, dinner=500
    Day 3: breakfast=300, lunch=900, dinner=200
    Day 4: breakfast=100, lunch=100, dinner=800
    * So you could start on Monday with Day1, Tuesday is Day 2, Wed. is Day 3, Thur is Day 4, then Friday you start the cycle over repeating Day 1, etc. (Friday = Day 1, Sat = Day 2, Sun = Day 3, Mon= Day 4, …, etc.)
**Important to not have snacks, and each meal should be approximately every 4 hours. A diet soda could serve as a snack, as well as water.
**Only drink water (and lots of it) with each meal and throughout the day–you will never see any real fat loss without it.
**This is not technically counting calories per se–it forces your metabolism to stay off balance. This means it will never adapt to any one calories at each meal and from day to day. Add to that some fast walking on a treadmill each day (not running just fast walking, approximately 30 mins to 1 hour), plus plenty of water and you will see fat start flying off your person within the first week.
** As to what to each for each meal–it’s common sense. You want to eat things with plenty of fiber and get your protein in there as well, but nothing like sugary foods, cakes, pies, etc. And no deserts
** If you do still eat things like burgers, fries, etc., it will still work–but it will work MUCH faster if you eat sensible things. Things with plenty of fiber and things like mixed vegetables, etc. You will see INCREDIBLE results if you combine this eating pattern with protein diet foods like Atkins, etc.–anything that runs up your insulin high like sugary foods, simple carbs, etc. are the enemies of fast fat loss.
** To anyone that says counting calories doesn’t work–BAH! OF COURSE IT WORKS! It’s common sense and basic body chemistry. And we all already know to do it–we know not to overeat and can’t overeat already–that is essentially counting calories. But once you get to your weight, you have to adapt to a lower caloric level for each person, and continue to eat the right foods (with the occasional cheat day, etc.–once you get there). The magic figure for most people is around 1500 calories/day, in order to stay at their ideal weight. Your body wants to be thin, you just have to let it be.

I work at Jenny, and I was very skeptical at first. In my opinion, the food is terrible – the target market are people who eat frozen foods/fast foods – so the quality compared to those options – WAY BETTER. Myself, I cook my own meals, so the food all tastes icky to me.
One interesting fact about Kirstie is that she was actually approached by many major companies when she ran the “Fat Actress” show – but not Jenny Craig.
She made the call herself; she was offended that the other companies were trying to capitalize on her weight gain, (and I think she wanted to stick it to them, on some level.)
As far as keeping the weight off – I have met many many people who have. They don’t do it by eating “Jenny food” – we are trained to wean people off that starting at their half-way-to-goal-weight.
Like any diet program – it is fine if you stick to it, pay attention in your consultations, and remain motivated, all of which your consultant will help you to do.

I went to my JC center in rural Massachusetts with the intention of joining, I had my hopes up, very optimistic and positive, they put me with one person to explain the whole procedure who was very nice and informative so I decided to join. After signing the papers, they scheduled me to meet with a skinny 18 year old girl every week who was going to coach me on the diet, what experience do you have to help me I asked politely, ( isin’t it my right to know?) she was very offended and put out that I could ask such a question, and got the manager from the back who came over and tried to strong arm me into shutting up and just buying the products I’d been told I need) good thing I still had my credit card in my hand which by the way she thought I was putting back in my bag, not getting out before she gave me the major attitude. I was very sad, my balloon was deflated. I thought I was going to be another Kirstie Alley story, I guess I’m lucky I saw their true colors. They didn’t care about helping me achieve my goals at all, it was very apparent they cared only about my credit card.
