Emagrece Sim: Warning

The FDA has finally added its voice to the furore over the so-called Brazilian Diet Pills. The pills are named either Emagrece Sim or Herbathin. Whilst claiming to be made from all-natural herbal products - they are most definitely not dietary supplements.

Both products are made in Brazil by Fitoterapicos (also spelled Fytoterapicos) and Phytotherm Sim. FDA has increased its efforts to prevent the importation of these products by issuing an alert to its field personnel.

Dodgy Diet PillsAfter testing - the diet pills were found to contain any of the following:

  • Chlordiazepoxide HCl (the active ingredient in Librium)

  • Fluoxetine HCl (the active ingredient in Prozac)

  • Fenproporex, a stimulant that is not approved for marketing in the United States. Fenproporex is converted in the body to amphetamine, and as a result has been noted to show up in urinalysis as a positive test for amphetamines.

It seems the two companies acting as importers for the pills will do their best to remain scarce:

The FDA said the pills are imported and distributed by two Florida companies, Emagrece Sim Laboratories Inc. of Miami, and EMIEX Corp. of Doral, Fla. No telephone listing for Emagrece Sim Laboratories Inc. could be found.

UPDATE Emagrece sim are still advertising their product in the US using Spanish radio. They claim that their products are FDA approved.

This is not true.

I have been pro and con both about getting in on the Emagrace bandwagon. Of course, this ad gives me a big red light. I have been overweight just about all my life and I admit that I am looking for that "magic pill" but I doubt there really is one. Should I be a risk taker and buy Emagrace? After all, being this fat is taking a risk with my life. Still undecided. I just had to think out loud.

They are known as Brazilian diet pills, promising to help you lose unwanted pounds fast by speeding up your metabolism.

But doctors warn if you take them you may lose more than just weight, like some south Florida women who found out when they failed pre-employment drug tests.

Carolina Siervo discovered what she calls a miracle weight loss system, Brazilian diet pills.

Siervo says she lost 60 pounds in only four months. Although the label says the pills are all natural, there are some variations that contain illegal amphetamines.

At least four unsuspecting women taking the diet pills failed pre-employment drug tests at Baptist Health South Florida.

Thomas Moore, Corporate Director of Employment Health Services sent the pills the women were taking to a lab to be analyzed.

"In most of them it was amphetamines, we found a drug called Diazepam which is a Valium," Moore said.

Despite the potential dangers, the pills could still be purchased on the Internet for up to $200 for a month's supply.

Siervo is happy with results so far and has no plans to stop taking the pills.

In the past, the FDA has rejected dietary supplements from the Brazilian diet pill manufacturer, Emagrece, because of misbranded nutrition labels.

There are some variations of Brazilian pills that are not considered dangerous, but doctors warn based on the label it is difficult to tell which ones are dangerous and which ones are not.

The Miami Herald newspaper attempted to contact Emagrece, but they could not be reached in Brazil.

People taking the pills take two pills a day, one in the morning and one at night. It is suspected that the pills taken in the morning contain amphetamines, and the pills taken at night contain tranquilizers.

Dear readers,

Like everyone else I have always been skeptical about diet pills until I saw real results on two close friends. One lost about 18 pounds and the other about 24. So I decided to go on them as well. In four months I lost 22 pounds. I had blood work done and my results were negative. All values were within range. However, not sure whether the urinalysis tested for drugs, since my lab work was no employment related. My friends reported getting somewhat "fidgety and having excess energy" while taking the pills. I did not feel these effects. To me it was like taking nothing. The pills will suppress your hunger to the point that you have to make yourself eat; otherwise you will get a headache, and this is when you make the decision to eat the right foods to aid in your weight loss goal. I don't want to advise anyone to take them since there are always risks associated with these kinds of pills. I have no pre-existing conditions and they worked for me. I feel very good. I see this "pill-taking" thing as a "one-time/action combo deal". In other words, you take the pills and as you are loosing weight you excercise (walk/weights/sport), you eat right and when you meet your goal you continue to excercise and eat right; and you do not touch these pills ever again!!!

As for me I prefer not to try losing weight any more by using any pills stronger than multiple vitamins. Been there, done that, with them all in the past. I tried every pill available with some results but never enough to suit me or fast enough. It developed into an obsessive compulsive habit and I began to take more than the directions suggested. My system became tolerant and the next thing I knew I was on amphetamines. I don't want to go there, other than to say, don't take a stimulating pill for losing weight. Now I have to stay away from any sort of triggers that will plunge me into an addictive state. You say it won't happen to you but is it worth taking that chance? When you take anything to alter your natural body chemicals, you are not your natural self anymore and don't know how you will respond until it is too late. That was just my opinion but it probably would be a safe and healthy thing to do if you first check with your primary physician.

I'm really tired of the fear mongering that goes on over diet pills. Ephedra was taken off the market not because it was dangerous....it was taken of the market because it worked. If ephedra was dangerous they would have also taken pseudophed off the market too since they are basically the same thing.

I would try these pills in a minute of I could get my hands on them. I would just start off by taking a very small amount and see how I feel. Then I would gradually wean myself off of them from time to time.

Being 50 pounds overweight is a lot more dangerous and life threatening than these pills.

Of course there are real results - they are amphetamines. Taking speed will certainly make you lose weight.

I think that there is a big difference between taking ephedra, which was regulated when it was marketed in the US, to taking back alley illegal imported pills. The issue here is not them being Brazilian - I'm Brazilian, it is not one of those "everything foreign cannot be trusted" things. These pills are not manufactured legally here. We have laws about Fenproporex, Prozac, Librium - they can only be prescribed and manufactured with special blue prescriptions, and you need all your documents to get them, there is a follow up on them, etc. I've been prescribed Prozac so I know what a pain it is, it is not like it is candy. So for these people to be manufacturing these pills and selling huge amounts to the US, they are either stealing the compounds or cooking them without any sort of control. God only knows what is really in these pills, or how much of it in each or in each batch. It is not like illegal drug dealers tend to care about these "minor details".

I have taken these pills and know plenty of people on it who are very happy with the results. Many of these people also took ephedra way back when and they are much happier with the emagrece sim. While I do find it a tad bit frightening that these pills could contain lord knows what, I hope that there is a way that it will become legally available in the US, as it has been quite helpful for me.

I have been trying to find consumer reviews from users that have taken Emagrece Sim. I have only found testimonials but they might be biased since they were posted on Emegrece Sim's website. Anyone know of any consumer reviews that they have come across?
