Seattle Sutton

Seattle Sutton (yes that's her real name) is the creator of a pre-packaged diet plan. Thanks to Vic who has given me the following outline of her experiences with Seattle Sutton:

Seattle Sutton is a prepackaged diet plan of fresh food that is provided twice a week. They have 2 levels, 1,000 calories that becomes 1,200 calories when you add 2 fat-free dairy products as recommended, or the 1,800 calorie plan with the same (or similar) recommendation. I've been doing the 1,200 calorie plan for 4 weeks. I'm going into my 5th week on Thursday. You start on Thursday when you pay and pick up your first set of meals. Then you return on Monday for the remainder of the week's meals.

Seattle Sutton is the name of the founder, a registered nurse who lives in downstate Illinois. She has a web site that shows menus and gives some background info. It's not a 'community' site, like Nutrisystem has. She calls it "Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating".

She has a couple of restaurants where you can get a meal to eat in or to go. There's one in Chicago, but I haven't been there in a couple of years. I don't know how extensive her business is nationwide. They have 2 types of business opportunities - one type that makes the meals, the other type is the meal distributor.

My meal distributor just has an office with a desk and 4 large, sliding-glass door refrigerators. The office is in a building that houses medical professionals (dentist and doctor offices). You just walk in, pay, and take your bag of pre-packaged goodies.

The packages are plastic boxes with clear tops. They are labeled, but not consistently. Some foods come with complete nutritional analyses. Some just tell you what's inside, no nutritional info.

Nutrition

They claim 64 grams of protein is provided per day. I don't think so. I've counted and some days you get 64, and some days you get 35. I asked about this, and they said it 'balances out for the week' (I'm not convinced, but I haven't calculated an entire week), and that you shouldn't eat too much protein anyway. With my surgery preventing me from assimilating everything I eat, I AM concerned about getting enough protein.

It is a calorie and fat controlled plan. But I don't think it's healthful as in 'health food' healthful. It is somewhat 'old fashioned' in that it's not low-carb at all. You don't get any choices, but they don't serve any beef, which was a plus for my taste. She offers way too many real sugar sweets (muffins, sweet breads), especially for breakfast. She also offers fruit juices, which I think are nutritionally not worth the calorie cost.

I just offer the breakfast foods to my family, and eat egg whites and whole grain toast, plain oatmeal or Total-type cereal with a fat-free milk or yogurt - anything but a muffin, thanks. I can't have too much sugar in one sitting thanks to my gastric bypass, not even a muffin.

Fresh Fruit


She provides fresh fruit in some, not all meals, on average 1 piece of fresh fruit a day. The fruit is very small in size and almost never ripe. They don't wash it or wrap it. The first week, I got a fresh (unripe) kiwi with my processed turkey 'steak' sandwich, which included a whole grain bun, lettuce, and low fat mayo.

The unwashed, unprotected kiwi had 'shed' kiwi 'fur' onto the turkey. I spent a good bit of time trying to figure out what it was on the turkey (it looked like someone had emptied their used razor onto it) until I figured it out. Sigh.

I haven't had any adverse effects from her food, so I guess I'll live (LOL!).

Summary

The food is rather bland (tuna noodle casserole) but she does try to make it interesting (the chicken fajita was good, but not spicy). Nothing is repeated in a month, altho in the 5th week, I've begun to seen repeated meals.

It costs me $99 a week for the 1,000 calorie plan. Not sure what the bigger plan costs. That's an 'average' cost. In some areas it's cheaper, but not more expensive, I don't think.

Since I started Seattle Sutton I've begun to exercise (jog 3 miles a day. 6 days a week). I think this has contributed to my feeling hungry, usually late in the day. I don't think 1,200 is enough calories for my activity level. I fill in with a mini-bag of popcorn, an extra yogurt or a piece of fruit at night. I've lost 9 pounds since I started. I think I gained a little muscle weight, tho.

Jacque, from what I understand the price for the 1,000 cals per day option is around $99 per week. Apparently the price can vary between cities/outlets,

can't imagine why they won't do custom orders. I'm getting back into bodybuilding after nearly a 20 year lay off and need to follow a regimented diet routine consisting of chicken or turkey, brown rice or yam and a vegetable (broccoli) if anyone knows of such a place in the Chicago area please let me know.

John, if you're still reading, I precook a less common grain Millet each week for a quick grain to add to lots of my meals - it has a higher protein value than rice and is tasty when you get used to it. I also add quinoa to the last 5 min cook time to add more nutrition. These are both more alkaline foods with super nutrition. Often I'll make a brown rice pilaf with extras like equal parts Millet, wild rice & brown with maybe a bit of red quinoa... very nice looking... cooks twice as fast as brown rice, about like white rice, but with added nutrition & fiber. For our kids I will sometimes add it to white rice for extra color (yello) plus nutrition, fiber.

John have you considered investing in a freezer? I just cook a ton of brown rice, yams etc. and keep them in the freezer to make quick meals. I also leave the turkey/chicken/fish in a pre-measured portion and cooked so all it takes is microwaving. That way I only really need to spend time in the kitchen once a month.

Jan, that's a really great idea!! Making your very own portion-controlled frozen dinners is a great way to save time, money, and calories. My grandma made tons of turkey stock at Thanksgiving time and froze it for soups later. And my mother-in-law freezes garden corn and green beans for later in the winter. The possibilities are endless. One thing about buying a freezer though: buy a chest-type one that opens on top, it's more energy efficient. :)

I don't really understand why you are on this diet plan if you do not find it to be healthy food or as you said bland and not prepared well? It sounds like you are slamming Seattle Sutton, yet you say you are starting your 5th week. I started on this 11 days ago and have lost 9lbs, I feel great and find the food to be very diverse and appealing.

Seattle food is good for me. I'm no cook and like having tasty food prepared. Yes, sometimes breakfast looks bleak but I supplement with my own yogurt. The best part is no contract to sign. If I'm having a busy week that keeps me away from home, I just don't order for that time period. I've been on it off and on for 6 weeks, lost 13 lbs. I don't do diets well, I admit I cheat. I look at Seattle food as a healthy way of eating for my lifestyle. I'm on the 1000 cal. meal plan. Yes, $99 per week sounds like a lot, probably because it's coming out of pocket all at once. I estimated how much I was spending eating out through out the week, which I did all the time and I spent as much and more, eating any ol' thing. I just want a closer distribution center so I won't have to travel so far to get my food.

It is $104/week where I live ($110 for the larger portions.) Thought I'd mention that since the article says she thinks it won't be more than $99.

Also... it did not look like a slam to me. Just an honest evaluation. Some of the food is tasty, some not, but it's always convenient. 1200 calories is quite low, and I'm sure a lot of us supplement that with some nice tasty fresh fruit or other healthy snacks. My kids also get most of the breakfasts... what I'd already been eating is better for me and just as convenient, but the kids really like them.

There is no commitment, but also no choices. You take everything for the week or nothing. Luckily, with a family of 5, there is someone to eat just about everything. It's great for someone who simply doesn't have time to cook during the week (I leave home at 5:40am, get back at 6pm if I'm lucky -- everyone's already hungry.) And I spend too much time playing catch-up with laundry, housework, and quality time with the family on weekends to waste it slaving in the kitchen preparing the week's meals.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a breakfast and lunch plan only and have the dinners optional? It would be easy to stay on Seattle Sutton and still make and share a nutrional dinner for the family.

I have been on the 1200 calorie, and my husband the 2000 calorie for 3 weeks now. I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised. The food is really good, the variety is good and I don't have to think about what I am going to eat and when I am going to prepare it.
It took me a few days to get accustomed to the smaller portion sizes, but what the food lacks in portion size, it makes up for in taste. I have read several reviews saying the food was bland and boring, but I haven't thought so. I mean, when you need to lose weight, you can't continue to eat the large amounts of pizza, wings and burgers that put the weight on in the first place. I have lost 14 pounds during my first 3 weeks, my husband has lost 7 pounds. If you are like us, need to lose weight but work full time and have other responsibilities, I recommend this diet plan. We are very pleased. My husband is a much pickier eater than I am, so the true test was when he ate the pita with hummas and cucumber sauce, and pronounced it good. I knew at that point this was a diet plan we could stick with.

I have been off and on Seattle Sutton for the past 6 years. I'm not too good about exercising, and if I just eat the program's food, and even a dessert of a Nabisco 100-calorie pack every night, I ALWAYS lose weight - it melts off and is effortless. I immediately have more energy every time I go back on the plan.

The key phrase, of course, is "every time I go back on." I live in the Chicago area, and the 2,000 calorie plan is $120 PER WEEK. I think going from about 3,500 calories a day before starting (which I think is a realistic daily intake for overweight people), down to 1,000 is incredibly bad for metabolism and overall nourishment. Your body can actually go into starvation mode, and make you pack on even more weight. Anyway, I am a paycheck to paycheck person, and there have been months at a time when I cannot afford the food. I am quite simply a food addict, and usually gain whatever I lost, once I go off the plan.

I just started again one month ago, after one month on NutriSystem. After enduring the ridiculous plan that is NutriSystem, I could not WAIT to get back on SSHE. It is now a priority in my husband's and my budget, right after rent and car payments. It's not sprouts and tofu, but it is much more healthful and balanced than the stuff I ate that made me fat. In 4 weeks, I can see my body frame getting smaller. My curves are more defined and not just fat. I look forward to my meals every day. Not all of them are to die for, but about 85% of them are absolutely delicious.

I love Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating. I really wish it was less expensive, but my health and longevity are much more important than frivolous items that have no long-term benefits.

If you're overweight, try as hard as you can to start this program. i just heard a radio commercial that said they are FINALLY nationwide. God bless 'em!

My husband and I have been enjoying Seattle Sutton meals for 8 months now. We order one set of meals. Between lunches or dinners out, we always seem to have plenty of food for the two of us. I think the cost is extremely reasonable considering the alternative of buying groceries - many times in larger quantities than needed - or eating food from restaurants a few times a week.
Its great to go to the fridge and look through the containers and have a complete meal already prepared. Its like having a personal chef!

Just picked up my first Seattle Sutton meals. Planning on doing the prepacked meals until the end of July, 2006 to see if I can lose some weight. I will try to check in weekly to progress my findings.
