Red Bull Gives You Wings?

Sales of the energy drink Red Bull have overtaken both Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke. Even though the volume of Red Bull sold is much smaller, it's higher price means big sales revenue. Energy drinks are growing in popularity and Coca-cola has launched their own brand - Full Throttle - but are these drinks good?

Most are loaded with sugar, and of course stimulants such as caffeine. They might sound like an exercise booster - but caffeine is a diuretic, and if exercising you must remain hydrated. Energy drinks aren't really the answer - although many a bodybuilder will slurp down a strong black coffee prior to a workout to provide an extra energy boost.

Energy drink advertising has to rank as one of the most successful marketing ploys in recent times. Kids plead for V to quench their thirst. Office workers turn to it for that "mid-afternoon wake-up call". Red Bull and vodka is popular in bars as a pick-me-up starter to the evening. Energy drinks are sold on the dance floor, at the sports field, and even at the gym. (via)
Sugary drinks are arguably the quickest way to load up on calories - they are available on virtually every street corner. Of course you could go for a frappucino instead - and end up consuming 728 calories (Starbucks White Hot Chocolate with Whip).

Learning to drink water is one of the best things you can do when trying to manage your weight.

They also make Sugar-Free Red Bull, which isn't AS bad I suppose. I still think it's overpriced and tastes absolutely disgusting though. I know a lot of people use it as a mixer for booze as well...supposedly it makes your buzz last longer. I've never tried it, but it doesn't sound good.

i was just going to say....Spectra is right. These drinks do come in sugarfree options. i was watching "downside me" an NZ diet show, and they showed this woman who "desperately" wanted to lose weight, but drank 6 regular V energy drinks per day....As the dietician was telling her that these rack up tons of calories, she only told her to replace them all with water and didnt even mention that the sugarfree V only has like 2 calories. Halfway through the show, the woman cheated and bought REGULAR V....and i'm sitting here yelling at the TV, "THE DIET ONE IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE REGULAR ONE!!!" i mean, obvious, no?

It is also popular with the young people to use these caffeine spike energy drinks mixed with alcohol - the caffeine helps you drink longer before you pass out.

I have given up all soft dirnks as well as the enrgy drinks - I do not want the caffeine, sugar, or the acidity (which causes mineral loss).

I am pretty much down to water, soy milk, and juice from vegetables and fruits that I make with a Vitamix.

I've been bouncing around from soft drink to soft drink. My main concern was weight control, but having learned about the chemicals in sugar free soft drinks I'm not sure where to turn. I learned about a new soda called Z, or Diet Z or maybe it's Z cola. Not too sure, I think it is just Z. Found it on a web site called steviashop.com but it looks like just an online store. Hope it hits the shelves soon!

I know I'm not the only person around who doesn't like water all that much. I'm all over diet soda, though, and it's working great.

You are absolutely right about sugary drinks. Juices are more insidious, in a way, since they've also got a bunch of sugar but are generally regarded as 'healthy'.

Someone who drinks 3 cans of regular soda per day will lose 48 lbs a year by simply replacing soda with water (450 calorie savings per day).

Or replacing the regular sodas with DIET soda. i lost 70 lbs 5 years ago, and kept it off by drinking diet soda instead of regular. That wasnt ALL i did, i stopped eating tons of junk food too, but i used to drink at LEAST 2 litres of REGULAR soda a day! No wonder i was fat :)

I know water gets a bad rap because it is very boring to drink and in many places in north america water tastes...lousy! I get into ruts where I forget to drink water and then there are times like today when I do drink a lot of water and usually the high water days I feel much better (and better exercised with all the trips to the bathroom).

Let it be known though that I am still a big fan of pop and drink a Coke everyday although the sugar crash has to be timed as I really do get a sugar crash and try to eat lunch just as my energy starts dropping off.

Coca Cola originally contained cocaine. Its a drug addicted world we live in and any excuse will do. No doubt we'll see more of these kinds of products in the future. Its all pretty harmless compared to prescribing Ritalin to school kids anyway.

So what is the debate about? I thought people drank red Bull not to lose weight but to increase their energy by the increase of caffeine. So the fact that Red Bull has loads of calories and sugar is point less. However how much caffeine is too much? NBC news said, “FDA doesn't require food and beverage makers to list caffeine on their nutritional labels - and the U.S. has no recommended guidelines for caffeine consumption. Teenage girls are particularly at risk for osteoporosis later in life because caffeine robs their bones of small amounts of calcium, and since the average teen drinks twice as much soda as milk, they're not getting enough calcium in the first place.”

Well, i dont need to lose any more weight, but i certianly dont want to gain any. Keeping track of calories, and choosing the diet options of everything helps me stay skinny. i was looking at a bottle of poweraide the other day and saw that there was 250 calories for the whole bottle. 6 years ago, i never even would have thought to look or take that into consideration. i honestly had no idea why i was obese. i think most obese people dont realise exactly why they are obese, because they really dont think about everything that is in these drinks and foods. i can imagine someone drinking Red Bull to give them energy for a workout when they are just too tired to be interested. i used to take caffine pills for the same reason. The problem is, they might consume more calories from the Red Bull then they burn in their workout. That 250 calorie poweraide would take an hour and 10 minutes for me to burn off by walking. (i dont know how many calories are in energy drinks, because i've only tried the sugarfree ones and they tasted incredibly nasty to me)

Red Bull has 110 calories and sugar free has 10 calories.

Caffeine is a diuretic; it can cause you to become dehydrated which means that your body gets weak from not having enough water. If you work out you need to replace the water you lose through sweating so I wouldn’t recommend drinking an energy drink before you work out.

Lana, I think that was part of my problem too. I used to drink SoBe energy drinks that had 300 calories/bottle with 2 PopTarts for breakfast. I thought it would help give me energy, but all it was really doing was making me fat. I think a lot of people don't read nutrition labels on things and don't realize that many times, "energy"="calories".
