Dance Dance Revolution Weight Loss

DDR.jpgYou can't lose weight playing a video game, right?

Wrong. But it takes no ordinary video game. Tanya Jessen lost a mind-blowing 95 pounds playing Dance Dance Revolution.

DDR, as the cool kids call it, requires you to move on a pad to play. In other words you have to dance for real!

Tanya Jessen, of Seattle, Washington, lost the weight with nearly zero change to her diet by regularly playing DDR in the arcade and then at home.

Tanya's website, GetUpMove.com, explains her unconventional weight-loss and how she hopes it will inspire people:

"This is Tanya Jessen's story of how she lost 95lbs, not through conventional diet and exercise but by playing the video game, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Tanya started playing DDR 4 years ago when she was 17 and enjoyed it so much that it became a regular activity. Through sharing her weight loss story, Tanya hopes to tell people that losing weight can be easy and fun by choosing an activity that fits in with your lifestyle. Tanya is working with RedOctane to educate Americans about a fun new way to lose weight while using an Ignition(tm) Dance Pad."

RedOctane is the top retailer of Dance Dance Revolution games and accessories in the United States. RedOctane's DDR pad is compatible with PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC.

And playing DDR will certainly get your heart rate pumping. DDR has a workout mode that allows players to track their calorie expenditure. The average person burns 16 calories per song, so in one hour an average weight person can burn 640 calories.

DDR has developed a tremendous cult following, even spawning competitions with dancers coming from far and wide, like this "tournament" in California:

Geez, video games have come a long way. Not to long ago, Super Mario was the only one jumping around.

I have really been playing DDR since about christmas.I have a Japanese and american ps2 and have all 6 versions (3 each) plus a competition dance mat(metal). I have lost 25 lbs since jan 3rd and just got my first AAA. What a Difference. DDR is the answer to American obesity, even if it did come from Japan.

Jo: If you look it up, it seems your body stores about 3500 calories per pound of body fat. For 20 lbs, that's 70,000 calories. I've read that playing DDR non-stop can burn about 640 calories in an hour. At an hour a day, every day, that would add up to 70,000 calories burned in about three and a half months.

The thing about it is, by excercising, you're going to increase your base metabolism, which means you'll burn calories at an increased rate even while not actively playing DDR. If you watch what you eat (i.e. don't go on an I-just-excercised binge too often), I'd guess that three months could permanently rid you of 20 lbs, but as always, real medical advice comes from medical professionals, not anonymous people on the net. (They might tell you that it may take less; I wouldn't know.)

I just started playing DDR at the beginning of this month and I play for about 3-3.5 hours a day. I've just now stopped getting joint pains but well x.x; I'm a beginner. Does anyone know if I'll lose weight playing beginner or do I have to wait until I can pull off the harder levels to start losing?

KosmicKittyKyo-

I just started playing DDR and started on beginner. Slowly you'll make it to light and then to standard. It took 7 days of light mode just to lose 2 pounds (But I played for about 4 hours each day). You'll be burning fat, don't worry about it. Its just easyer on harder levels because you're moving around more. Oh, and here's a secret to getting good at DDR quickly- Don't bring your feet back to the middle. Where ever you place your foot last (I.e the right arrow) keep it there and wait for the next arrow to come. As you want to get better and faster at the game, you will notice bring your feet back to the middle will be impossible. So don't go back to the middle! Oh yeah- I've lost 4 pounds in the past 2 weeks since I started- I'm a standard/heavy mode player now too (from playing so much).

I've lost about 10 lbs from playing since February, playing on Game mode I use light mode and for workout mode I am on Standard/Heavy since you cant fail, just keep moving, it counts every step you make, even if it's the wrong one

Cutting calories is also a good idea even while DDRing, Times your ideal weight by 15 if you are fairly active or 20 if you're very active then subtract 500-1000 calories and that is how much you should allow yourself to get to and stay at that weight

Interesting Idea! I've watchedd the kids (10 & 14yrs) play this and there's no doubt that it does what you must do to loose weight--constant movement of you're large muscle groups.
?I'm concerned about the constant impact inherent to the game, so I'm wondering if anyone has checked this with a bones and joints Dr. or a foot Dr.? If not, perhaps a sports medicine or even a GP? Any articles out there?
I'd be very interested in feedback on impact considerations, because I love dancing, and I'm a tennnis-player, so this would also help my footwork and lateral stability on the court!

Hi! My 7 year old just started DDR Extreme. He is participating in a study through my insurance company and a State College Medical Center. They gave us a console, dance pad and game. They took lots of measurements and did a great deal of testing concerning cardiovascular and respiratory. He will go back in 3 months for a check in and this is a 6 month study. It is very involved and there is a great deal of record keeping. Anyway, the pad that they provided- through the Health/Sciences and Sports medicine department- is a very nice cushioned pad which, it is my understanding is safer as far as the impact on the joints. I believe they said the pad is about $109.00. I am curious about somehting though. He has been playing for about 5 days and has gaine 1.5 pounds. Has anyone found that to be typical intially? Also, has anyone else particpated in this type of study?

dont freak out about that 1.5 pounds, its most likly muscle, just think about how much the game effects your leg muscles... i also have a question, if you can burn about 500 calories in 30 min, and watch what you eat, but arnt losing much weight, what would you say i should do differently?? or should i just stick with it?

it's probably water weight. Most peoples weight fluctuates from the amount of water in their system. Depending on what time you weighed him it could vary quite a bit (my own weight flucuates as much as 5 pounds up or down). You should probably take several weighings over the course of a few days and see what that tells you. It probably is not muscle, muscle takes a consideral amount of time to grow and 1.5 pounds in 5 days would be nearly impossible.

concerning your problem with not losing weight moon, you have probly hit a platou(sp?). At this point your muscles are getting used to the work their doing and you will need to increase the intensity of your workout. Now might be a good time to try and move up a difficulty. Also, an important factor in weight loss is building muscle. Muscle increases your metabolism, and will also make you healthier, more attractive, and all sorts of other things. If you were playing DDR primarily as a means of weight loss, you defanitly need to consider adding some weight training to your plans.
